I use my card 99% of the time but I like to have cash on me, especially for smaller things, and don't like anyone telling me I can't use it.

Every time you use your card it increases your risk of electronic fraud. Then you have to ditch the card and wait 7-10 days for them to send you another one.

I am housebound so don't go anywhere. I arranged a MasterCard though AustPost so that my daughter can use it for shopping for me, etc. I transfer funds into that as necessary and the balance is fairly minimal. I get bills via email and pay them online. The lawnman gave me his BSB so I pay him that way, as I do with several other things, that you are asked to pay "cash" for.

I do have a few dollars in my wallet as I remember that, way back, you were considered destitute if you didn't have any money in your wallet, it wouldn't mean anything these days since everybody has a card of some description, so you wouldn't get into bother for not having any cash on you. Old habits die hard.

However, the above is the way I handle it but, like you, I certainly would not want "them" telling me what I can do with my money or how I spend and it.
