Expressions you hate

Post by Hebe » Thu Oct 24, 2019 11:32 am

Wow, there are so many. Everything these days is “iconic”. Every fall of snow is a “winter wonderland”. Then there’s “to the next level”. And “110 per cent”.

I dared our local paper one year to avoid saying “winter wonderland” for the whole winter, and they did! Hasn’t happened since though.

Are there any expressions or terms you can’t stand?

Oh my gosh, like, here's the T...that is so basic, right? Like, so basic, I'm shook! I'm thinking that we need to collab with the woke peeps 'cause they're like snached, like, so hot! Yaas!

Triggered, Safe Space, any PC replacement word we have to replace words we have used for years

Nigger, Negro, Black, African American, people of color - Make up your mind what you want to be called and what is offensive and leave it alone.
Queer, Gay, homosexual - same thing

Homophobe - Just because I think a lifestyle is immoral, doesn't mean I am afraid of them. Diddle whatever consenting adult you want in private, just don't throw it in my face and don't try to sell your lifestyle to my kids.

Any phrase that some people can use that others cannot without being called racist, bigot, homophobic, etc.....

It's not so much phrases as words with me.

Supposedly is not supposably.

There is no such word as irregardless. It's regardless.

Those are common American mispronunciations.

Texas has a whole list of unofficial contractions and word combinations and I use them, but I try not to use them when I am typing.

Ya'll - you all, you guys, whatever

ain't - am not, are not

git - get, Let's git out of here.

yep - yes, unless I say yes ma'am or yes sir

fixin' to - getting ready to

Coke refers to all carbonated soft drinks in TX, except maybe Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper was first made in Waco TX and holds a slight position of elevated respect to most.

"Would you like to come with?" or "Would you like to go with?" leaving off the obvious pronouns me, us etc. It seems to be a fad at present.

"I could care less" instead of the correct "I couldn't care less". Both have totally different meanings.

Words ...

Nuclear. It's not noocular.

Mischievous. It's not mischeeveeus.

Espresso. It's not expresso.

Wow, thank you all. I’d forgotten “like” and I know someone who says “irregardless” and “mischevious” is all too common. I don’t know what to call African Americans either, though obviously it’s not that big a problem here.

I’ve found a whole lot more expression to be irritated about, yay! :rofl

When typed "All intense and purposes". It's "all intents and purposes".
