THE head of the $43 billion national broadband network has warned that the federal government will not make a financial return on its ambitious project for up to 30 years.
Speaking before a Senate select committee, NBN Co chief Mike Quigley raised fresh doubts about the project's ability to attract private investment when he told senators that capital returns from the project to provide broadband at speeds of up to 100Mbps across the country would be long-term.
"The board's role is to get a satisfactory long-term return on the capital the government invests," Mr Quigley said. "Now it's up to the government to determine what that return rate is, but we would hope to generate a return.
"This is a long-term project, so for this type of nation-building infrastructure I'd imagine you'd be looking at a 20- to 30-year timeframe."

DOLLAR signs and question marks continue to cast shadows over the government's plan to build its $43 billion high-speed national broadband network a year after Kevin Rudd launched the project.
One year ago today, the Prime Minister unveiled his dream to provide 90 per cent of the nation's premises with a fibre-to-the-home broadband network, promising internet access speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. The remaining premises would get next-generation wireless and satellite services delivering 12Mbps or more.
But as the anniversary ticks over, not a single service has been switched on and the private sector -- which the government desperately needs to help fund the project -- is no closer to understanding how or if the project will ever make a return.
Since scrapping the original and inferior NBN tender, the cost of Mr Rudd's election pledge has skyrocketed.
That aborted tender alone cost more than $30 million in administration and consultancy fees.
Since then the government has forked out an additional $25m to McKinsey and KPMG to delve into the costs, structure and financial viability of the new NBN.
this is all wrong. you don't delve into costs, structure and financial viability AFTER starting a project !!!!!!!!!!
