No.

A. It is UN recognized and would not be recognized as part of Australia by the UN even if the people of East Timor wanted such.

B. Indonesia would not have it.

C. We are not Russia; we do not carve out new nations from old nations simply to add them to our empire.

On the upside, it does have a lot of natural gas.

Huuuuuuuuuum?

I agree with B. It would really piss the Indonesians off. Howard was lucky not to stir up a hornets nest with what we've already done. It could have ended very badly.

Why not?

I think it could work, if people went to East Timor for hols instead of Bali it would help their economy and with all the aid we give them already I dont think its a "centrelink problem" to do it.
We can continue to prop them up forever or let them join the party.

Use your imagination. That would have to be one of the most peacefully created new nations ever. We all got off lightly.

So you see it as a disaster? As the worst possible outcome?

The end result was close to peaceful but East Timor had bloodshed for 30 plus years before it was possible.
As far as the costs I agree the natural gas up there would cover that and then some.
I also agree that Indonesia would have a major tanty, thats the reason it wont happen, but that dosn't mean its not a good idea.
