Scott Morrison has promised to crack down on social media trolling and increase punishments for the exploitation of children online as he identifies his immediate priorities for government if the Coalition wins on 18 May.
As Bill Shorten launched Labor’s campaign in Brisbane on Sunday morning, Morrison promised to increase the maximum penalties from three to five years for people who use a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence under section 474.17 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

“Menace, harass or cause offence”

These laws could be really far reaching in extent. “Causing offence” is now to be against the law?

Like billy said, this is just Orwellian. I want to move to Trumptopia. I can deal with “locker room talk”. I can’t deal with this.

And it’s a direct attack on the freedom of the internet.

Of course, when you think about it...on line abuse would be hard to prove....
If something is posted and someone complains about it, alleging he/she is offended...how is the charge proven, unless the person offended actually sat next to the poster and watched as he/she posted the offensive material.....
An internet address may be proven to belong to a computor, but that doesnt prove who posted the offending material.....
In other words...how many computers are used by more than one person.....
"Beyond reasonable doubt" I think the burdon of proof is......

Its coming...the rest of the world versus islam....or is it here already...

Reminds me of an ex member who had forums closed down and contacted people's work to get them sacked because he didn't like what they said. Part of the always offended brigade. If people are so easily offended they should ditch their computers.

On the other hand there is a lot of jealousy and bullying amongst teenagers and sometimes with a shockingly sad outcome. I don't know if there is any fool proof way to nip that in the bud without the always offended turning it into a farce.

The British Empire ended in 1956 with the Suez Crisis. Australia had already chosen to join the Commonwealth of Nations, a completely different organisation. Some people seem to want to live in the past it seems. What a shame the world has moved on, quite markedly from the days when Black people knew their place, hey?

I agree that is a real problem. Maybe you need to be 18 plus to access social media, and go ride a bike or something?

Regarding the first paragraph -- are you sure it is a case of "always offended brigade", or is the person in question just a nutty old sociopath?

Which brings me to a point, actually. How many of these people who want to burn books and shut down freedom of speech are actually offended and not using laws and morals as some sick strategy to get back at people they don't agree with?

And also, addressing your second paragraph, Boss -- I do think the use of social media and the internet for juveniles is a concern, especially for what it is being used for. Bullying, revenge porn etc can do a lot of psychological damage.

Like anything though, it isn't the tool but how the tool is being used. A gun is useless without somebody pulling the trigger. A truck (with common sense used) is fairly safe to drive, until it is used to mow down a crowd of people in a busy steet.

What we need to ask is why people (especially our youth) are so nasty in a world that we are constantly preached to by media stating we are evolved, intelligent "civilized" beings.

Very little has changed. People still use violence, but "smart" people fight their battles passive aggresively these days. And all it takes is one piss weak excuse and they can avoid accountability.
