Fuck me dead! Now the distillers are doing a holier than thou act that they don't want the $300m returned. heh, they will save $1.6Bn and increase sales of alcopops heaps so they can easily make this gesture, a gesture priceless in its PR value "we are good people, not bad!"

Bah! Christians {spit!}

They shouldn't get it back, they would have jacked up the prices on their product to cover the extra tax anyway, the people who have bought alcho pops for the past nine months or whatever are the ones who should be refunded.
FREE alcho pops for all . :D

The government doesn't have to give it back - it is only their "moral" values making them do this. They can quite easily legislate that the tax isn't to be returned and so they should. It is the customers who are out of pocket - not the distillers.

If anyone thinks that once this tax is removed - the price will be reduced on alco pops - have another think. Prices will remain the same, the distillers will pocket the unnecessary rebate and revel in the increased prices and life will go on. The only difference is the distillers will end up having record profits and the government will get zilch.

It should never have been introduced in the first place - but once it was - there should be no turning back. The government has stuffed up and Fielding has cost the taxpayer & consumer dearly and increased the profits for the distillers. No matter what the cost to consumers - they will still buy the product.

These are the idiots who run our country.

It should have been introduced, as a measure rationalising excise on spirit based products which had the beneficial effects of reducing alcohol consumption and increasing tax revenue-$1.6Bn is a large gap in these recession/depression years. Since the distillers paid the tax it has to be returned to them--this happened under Howard with beer excise. The Constitution is the law that says govts have to hand back excise collected but not validated by having a Bill passed.

The Fibs voted against the measure because they didn't want to admit Tip stuffed up.

And the price on alcopops WILL be reduced because the bloody distillers want young people to start binge drinking heaps again, goodness me a child of 3 would know that!

And the idiot was Fielding: he got nothing on the $42Bn stimulus package and now tried for something he was never going to get.

The other idiot was Rudd, calling this rationalisation of excise a measure against binge drinking.

Bwahahaha

Attabull trying to pin Rudd down on medicare safety net changes. Rudd just has fun mocking them for the $1.6Bn hole the Fibs/Nuts/FF have blown in the budget.

Now the Fibs are saying shit like ". . .this will result in a Rudd Recession." Who the hell decides their tactics? Everyone knows the recession is worldwide. Everyone knows Rudd is leaving no stone unturned to soften the impact of the recession in Australia.

Their tactics are probably crap because they are burned up with fury that so far the recession hasn't really bitten here. Cash splash, Rudd recession, really!
