A section in the cease fire agreement, prohibited saddam from using fighterplanes in between the no fly zones. However they allowed him to use helicopters for "administration purposes". And that's how they napalmed the south and cities like kirkuk in the north.

It does not look that way, the Sunni participated in huge numbers in the last election and took a beating when the Sunni Shia ethnic killing started in 2005 and 2006, they have also been reconciled to the centrail government some what after it went after fellow Shia Sadar and thumped him, it is clear the Shia majority in Iraq are not a pawn of Iran as the Sunni feared and in poll after poll most Iraqis have indentified themselves as Iraqis first and their respective ethnic group second.

This nation can hold.

As to regugees, they are returning in huge numbers.

Indeed under Saddam they could not leave, but they did die, my how they died in his endless wars and oppression, so any lamenting the refugee crises while ignoring the voice of their democracy, what they actually want, would be, I think cynically interested in Iraqi welfare when Iraqi welfare is in the interest of their personal world view.

I can stomach a civilian who knows nothing about war, and who never trained for war to be so defeatist, but the way Scorpy has whined like a four year old baby for years that all is lost, the dense way he refused to acknowledge the rise of Iraqi democracy, the heroic struggle Iraqis have made to make their democracy grow under one of the most horrific assaults any insurgency has inflicted on a civilian population, the way the issue was always about his personal sense of failure and despair has me thinking one thing:

I agree with liberation (the toppling of Saddam was done with the least loss of life of any invasion of a country this size in human history) but I do not agree with Bush's lack of occupational planning.

Still, this does not speak to the idealism inherent in the project, indeed the lack of occupational planning was caused by excessive idealism and belief in democracy. They democratised before they imposed a new order.


Democracy is already there with higher participating rates than most consensual democracies. (Though no person would argue it is not fragile, as all new democracies are.)

Most international certification bodies, including the UN acknowledge it as a democracy and indeed given how much the Iraqi people have risked to vote, now four times, one must say it is a democracy of more noble character than many nihilistic western democratic parties.
