All recycling placed in yellow bins will now be dumped in landfill by Queensland’s Ipswich City Council, with the local government saying it is too expensive to continue.
Mayor Andrew Antoniolli said Ipswich was the “latest domino” to fall victim to the recycling import ban imposed by China, which previously accepted up to one million tonnes a year from Australia.
Contractors were asking the council for about $2 million more each year as the result of the import ban, representing up to 2 per cent more in charges.
Cr Antoniolli said the new regulations required co-operation from all levels of government.
“I have spoken personally to the [environment] minister on this issue, and made it clear that we’ve been backed into a corner on recycling,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Environment Minister Leanne Enoch said she was disappointed with the council’s decision.
She said the issue would be discussed at a meeting of state and territory environment ministers next week.
“China’s decision is a national issue for our waste and recycling industry and the federal government needs to show leadership to deliver a national solution,” Ms Enoch said.
Liberal National Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said the Labor council and state government had let the community down.
“[Premier] Annastacia Palaszczuk and her local Labor members have stood by and done nothing while their comrades at Ipswich City Council stop collecting household recycling,” Ms Frecklington said.
“The local community is saying no to more super-dumps but now Labor councillors have adopted a policy to literally put more rubbish into landfill. It doesn’t make sense.”

Firstly, manufacturers need to be made to cut down on packaging but why are we sending our recycling to China? Surely it would be cheaper to recycle it here and also provide more jobs.
Decades of consecutive governments never fail to keep letting us down and selling us out.

Apparently China is the recycling centre of the world.
China has tightened up on how 'clean' the waste it gets. Aust is finding that level of separation hard to do

Well Australia needs to wake up and educate people. It's incredibly costly and stupid to be shipping our recycling waste to China on the one hand and yet putting our hands up to be a nuclear waste dump for the world on the other.
I honestly can't believe how none of our politicians (except the smaller parties like ON) have so little regard for their own country.
I don't have a clue about Queensland, but in Sydney the worst perpetrators for fouling the recycling bins are the Asians. They toss their garbage everywhere so long as it is over their own fence/balcony. All our bins have Asian instructions (most likely Mandarin) on them which they also take no notice of. It's common for the paper bins to smell of soy sauce.

Face it.... we have useless individuals in government and it would seem our "leaders" in "enterprise" are just as dumb.

I think you need some retail therapy to distract you from reality.

Nom! Nail. Head. I do need some retail therapy and have been thinking so for awhile
Gasification looks promising but my main concern with recycling is in paper products. We should not be razing trees just to package goods and throw them away and it is mainly the paper products that people contaminate with recycling.
It used to enrage me when we lived up the north coast that they would fell everything in site to make railway sleepers. Even small trees trying to grow back, barely bigger than my arm, were razed for use as pit props. Never saw them replanting.
