Re: The Republic
I haven't paid much attention to the Republican issue and remain a bit ignorant on the subject, although the thought of all of Australia being controlled by one person is a little daunting and who could you ever trust.
Re: The Republic
Well, all of Australia is controlled by one person, the PM!
A lot of nonsense is talked about an elected Prez. Bullshit for the very biggest part! idiots say we will be like America, millions spent on campaigns etc.
Crap! An Australian Prez will NOT control the executive a la the 'States! There goes most of the BS. An elected Prez would have his own mandate as well as the 'reserve powers' would open Parliament and be part of Exec Council like the GG is now and that is about it officially.
However, imagine, shuddery tho the very thought of it is, the Rodent winning in 2007 and making WC more extreme and altering the Electoral Act even more than he did, becoming a senile dictator in other words. This is where an elected Prez could step in and not let the Bills be signed.
Talking about the senile Rodent, is he getting some big medal from soon-to-be-ex-Prez Shrub?

Re: The Republic
Yes a Medal of Freedom. What a big joke. Bush and Howard are such lovers of peace (not).
Re: The Republic
Hahahaha yeah, peace lovers. . .heard it on radio but was still half asleep

Re: The Republic
"The President is honouring these leaders for their work to improve the lives of their citizens and their efforts to promote democracy, human rights and peace abroad," White House press secretary Dana Perino said. (ABC website.)
Efforts to promote democracy, like trying to stop young people getting on the rolls to vote last November? He should ahve got a medal from hitler or Stalin, more appropriate re efforts for democracy (i.e. winding it back!)

Re: The Republic
Its funny how everyone speaks of/to the Republic dabate as 'The Republic'; as if it were already there.
It isnt.
Although I admit it might be by convention; thus a "Captured Republic". But most dont say anything about the benefits or even more especially about the 'need' for this grandiose republic. Some want there express dictator I spose, others are furious at the realm of the Queen and liken the authority to that of a God so they want to cast it aside, whilst still others recognise the potential to abrogate the law during introduction and subsequent power vacum (not dissimilar to Israel at the moment (dont say I said it)) and have a bit of fun. Even if just temporarily; some fringe dwellers hope for permanancy.
Look at Sydney- as soon as Labor got in, all the teller machines around the place got blown up. To f'n easy eh. Clearly an inside job that goes all the way to the top, and beyond. SO, extend the theory a bit wider, and there is a great chance that there would be some huge event take place during the glorious inauguration of prez elect -and maybe just for the hell of it-, Mrs Whoizit.
But seriously, we should be asking just what is it all about? I mean, if we look at the dictatorship of the BBGen, we need ask what will follow. This is is a serious proposition being proffered by the proponents, and it should not be taken lightly.
JM here seems to have down, as if it is already on the books, modelled, tested and ready to go (which I spose it is).
The dear leaders role needs some serious debate, if it is to be introduced. For example, if America is a corporation -as some argue-, will we be asked to vote in a simple CEO; or we will we be looking to vote for a returnable office bearer whos terms of engagement suit Australias federal and state needs.
A Republic for a Republic's sake (which is where we are at now I would say) is no solution or need at all.

Re: The Republic
Just posted a link to the polling.
We should stand on our own feet, symbolically as well as actually. Be nice to chamge the flag at the same time--the Canadians have a crackerjack one!

Re: The Republic
I can't see the majority wanting a Republic, but no doubt the government will be brainwashing us in the future as this being the best way to go. Too many of us don't understand the consequences and when the campaigning begins - it will only present the positive side of becoming one.
I vote NO to a republic.
I vote NO to a republic.
Re: The Republic
Vote NO, why?
Just making real what actually happens now, the last tenous, symbolic links.
