Reconcilliation day?

Post by skippy » Tue Jan 20, 2009 1:44 pm

"The theme of this year's Australia Day celebrations will be reconciliation, in an inversion of what indigenous Australians have traditionally referred to as "invasion day".

Official celebrations began at a dawn event in Cooktown today to mark the beginning of the week leading up to Australia Day and to discuss what it means to be Australian.

National Australia Day chairman Adam Gilchrist said the nation had been forced to acknowledge its past after the Federal Government apologised to the stolen generation in February, which made this year's event different"

I think what Gilly really meant to say was " The gov had been forced to say sorry after years of the rodent refusing too".

That aopology speech by Rudd was powerful. . .if the miniature person that used to be PM could have brought himself to have made that speech he could still be PM today.

I had brought my 12" TV in on that day and the speech had just started when a young guy came in--we both watched the speech, whole 30 minutes of it. Later that day a business type came in and I mentioned the speech: he said he hadn't thought an apology was necessary but he was moved by and approved of the speech. That was a Lieberal!

Are humping kangaroos part of the official celebrations? If yes, then count me in.

Sorry Skippy not trying to be smart, maybe my humour batteries need a good charge. Besides that avatar of yours is quite hypnotizing.

Btw Skippy I hope you don't hate me too much re: nuclear power. I don't feel that strongly about it to make enemies. Workchoices is obviously another matter.

I dont hate you at all ,how could I hate some one who looks like Nicol Kiddman and says they like humping roos, as for your nuke power beliefs I think you're wrong, but with a bit of time I'm sure you'll come around to my way of thinking.

The whole topic is based on looking back... reconciliation should aim to look for a way forward.

Rodent is no longer in power, what do you expect your savior to do for the cause, Skip?
"But you will run your fluffy bunny mouth at me. And I will take it, to play poker."

I wasn't particularly moved by the speech..it was an easy ask, that bit of emotive claptrap..Rudd gained some cheap political points..thats it.

It always easy to give the pple what they want..its always harder to go against the grain

It was never going to be a hard speech to write....the hard part was deciding wether it should be written at all apparently.

I was all for the saying of "sorry" to Aboriginal pple, but tired of it ( the speech) being put out there as some kind of Martin Luther type historical document. It wasnt.!
