The future of the world.
Not the party.

Just voting is not enough. You have to DO something! Should also discuss this with others or those afraid of change--e.g. Andrew Dolt, Piers Akerman, Sheepy--will delay the changes we need to make until it is too late: tipping points in climate change can HUGELY increase the consequences of and cost of acting against or even just mitigating severe climate change.

That is why I crap on about my garden. Fresh veges/fruit are delicious and flowers very attractive to look at but the mulch and manures (no artificial fertilisers) decay into the soil locking up carbon there! The food you grow has no 'food miles' so no emissions created just by transporting produce and no emissions making artificial fertiliser.

Tipping points in climate change.

One is occurring here: not only are bushfire seasons starting earlier and lasting much longer but the big fires we get are bigger and hotter. In times past the CO2 etc emitted from burning vegetation would be soaked up in consequent years as new trees/shrubs etc regrew. But now the fires are so hot that trees are burned through and killed, the seeds that have evolved to need heat to germinate are now being burnt up. Revegetation occurs much slower.

In the Arctic the melting ice is exposing more ocean: the ocean is dark and absorbs sunlight unlike the white ice that reflects the sunlight. That is not all: the countries bordering the arctic ocean have vast areas of tundra that is beginning to thaw out, releasing the methane stored therein! A positive feedback will be set up that at some point will escalate exponentially.

Some good things are happening. Farmers are leaving the trash from the last harvest in place thus locking up CO2 in their soil --and preventing their soil being blown away in huge duststorms!

It is very hard to measure this effect but eventually, under the ETS, farmers will be able to sell credits for this locked up carbon, giving them an extra income stream. Re-afforestation is now happening thanks to various tax incentives and this can be very good if done right--some don't like it because it represents change. Too bad, they will be in for lots more change :)

No can do XBZ the crazy.

I can’t vote for a party that demands we all must be poor to keep the globe in a climatic stasis it has never been in.

Might as well vote to stop the industrial revolution or the invention of fire.

I have been reading a book lately by Julia Baird called Media Tarts not a new book profiling the cautionary tales of many woman of recent times who have held high positions in Politics and it aint good. The demise of the Democrats in particular was similar to scratching my fingernails down a blackboard. Some cautionary tales indeed very depressing ones actually she likens them to heads on sticks for others to be warned by if you get into this dirty, grubby, mud slinging, backstabbing, muck racking, Machiavellian (in the worst sense of the word) blokey game this is what will happen to you. And it will. So I advise anyone who even has a remote thought about politics and is a woman to read this book. The media don't come up smelling of roses either.

I'm no fan of the Greens and I am especially critical of the people who vote for them. In my experiences people who vote for the Greens think that's all they have to do to do their bit for the environment. Vote for the Greens then continue driving your fuel thirsty cars to the corner shop, have the heater and air conditioner on all the time, leave the lights on, use your mobile phone continuously, take the longest showers imaginable, leave your TV on all day, eat fast foods and on and on it goes. But it's okay because they voted for the Greens and participated in Earth Hour. The Greens know this but do fuck all to educate their own supporters on what idiots they are.

Now obviously not all Greens voters do this but I know too many who do. When they put their money where their mouths are then maybe I'll take this seriously.

There's no point having a philosophy/values if you don't endeavour to act in accord with it. That is true whether your philosophy is green or capitalist.

Sounds interesting xbz - I'll see if I can get a copy. I support the Australian Greens for the simple reason that they are the only party that gives a damn about our environment, conservation and the preservation of humanity through sustainability. They do battle in areas that other political parties won't touch, yet these controversial issues mean so much to various groups within our society.

The future worries me , now and after I'm gone. Even with all this talk about climate change and an ETS - it is just getting worse. There has not been the slightest decrease in our destruction of this planet, if anything it has increased. It's as though we're trying to draw the last bit of life blood from it before we all perish - which of course we will if we continue the way we're going.
