http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008 ... 310378.htmNT Labor, Country Libs should 'come clean' on nuclear waste: campaigner ABC News 22 July 08 - "An anti-nuclear campaigner says the Northern Territory Labor Party and the Country Liberals should come clean over their stance on a proposed nuclear waste dump in the Territory.
The Federal Government announced last week it would review the situation after the previous Howard government passed legislation forcing the facility on the Northern Territory.
But Natalie Wasley from the Alice Springs-based Beyond Nuclear Initiative says politicians should put their cards on the table.
'Before the election the Federal Government gave a really clear commitment to overturn the laws that were rammed through when Howard was in power' she says.
'Because there has been no movement we are really hoping to see all candidates to stand up really strongly and say to the Federal Government we are standing on a platform that says we do not want a radioactive waste dump in the Northern Territory'.....................

NT nuclear waste dump
You may or may not remember me posting links on PA showing how the building of the NT rail by Howard was actually a step in helping a US government related company set up a nuclear waste storage facility. I note that apparently Labor said it would stop this facility- i hope it does. I thought this was a particularly sickening example of Howard's sucking up.
Re: NT nuclear waste dump
Too right!
WE should charge the yanks and Brits for storing their waste in the worked out mines in Broken Hill!
These mines are deep, dry hard rock mines--no water, no gases etc. And surrounding rocks are lead containing! It would revitalise BH! CSIRO and a university could do research into the nature of the waste, its safest storage methods etc, monitoring the stored waste etc. Gets the waste out of the environment--see what heretic posted in the FIR thread, out of reach of terrorists etc etc. Perfectly safe and would ear us a HUGE income practically forever!

Re: NT nuclear waste dump
Rainbow - I posted the same links on Cracker a year or so ago. They have a choice of 3 sites in the NT - but I think one has already been chosen. That's why the Ghan Railway was set up jointly by the Howard Government and a Haliburton subsidiary to give the world easy access to what will be the the future global nuclear waste tip. Howard was no slouch and would have ensured that all deals were signed, sealed and delivered in regard to not only this dump, but to our processing uranium here and future NP stations. That's why it was so important for him to attend the Apec summit as PM alongside his mate Bush and declare to the world we were members of the GNEP (big boys nuclear club).
Nuclear power isn't about a cheap and clean energy source, it's about preserving the investments of the world's elite and this industry from start to finish is heavily subsidised by all governments who deem to use NP. The propaganda from the NP lobbyists is unrelenting.
I don't know if Rudd has a choice on this and whether it's possible for him to back out of the deals made by the previous government. He shouldn't have made promises he couldn't keep - but the start of a new campaign has already begun with ATSE who have advised that we need to put NP on the table to comply with Garnaut's report.
Something is very suspect about the uranium/nuclear proposals - no-one is being honest. Australia can't afford NP and we don't need it, but already today there is an announcement that clean coal is no longer viable. Rudd has recently invested another $ half billion on top of the handout by the Howard government a couple of years ago to the coal industry for research into clean coal - so what is our next alternative? Those members and submissions of ATSE are questionable - directors of BHP and so forth.
