Things are not what they used to be and most young people (especially those living and working in Sydney and Melbourne) cannot afford to live on one income and save for a house as well because rents now are huge too. As the years go by they need to make a choice to have children or let that pass them by. Most who do choose to have children cannot usually do that on one wage.
The wage to mortgage ratio now is astronomically higher than it was back in the day.
Even my own Mother wasn't pleased to be a "home maker". She started her own business. Selling plants and stuff to people (and designing gardens) just buying a new home.
