So long as the tent has an air mattress and zip flyscreens, I think I could manage it, so long as I had something decent to cook on.
I might think about a camp out.... cant in my court yard because it's pathers and concrete.
we just use an 18' caravan these days...
2 single beds (opens up the floor)
a reclining chair with foot rest
150lt 3 way fridge
solar power/Batteries - lights, tv, water pump, stove fan and rotisserie
gas cooking
diesel heating
inverter to 240v - 600 watts
toilet
shower
we like to rough it you know..
That's pretty cool. That's campervanning with style
yeah its pretty good.. '
but I can easily travel australia on a motorcycle and swag...
or.. I've toured Tasmania on a motorcycle and 3 man light weight tent and fold out chair..
me and the mrs on a Goldwing/trailrer to Darwin and return
and even a GSX1400 and Trailer around NSW.... light weight 6 man tent and the bare essentials...
unbelievable trips...
Do u mind if I call u maverick from here on?

lol
all im saying.. is that you don't need much to travel around australia... or even small trips..
a two man tent, a small "throwaway" gas bottle and screw in stove top and can's of mixed meals ... like Irish Stews or Red Wine Beef etc etc etc... oh... and a fold up chair..
I saw one guy over in WA Esperance... all he had was a farm bike... something like a CT175 with a milk crate on the back of it to carry is gear... its that simple...
you start with a few "overnighters" ... fix what didn't go right ... and then extend it to 2 nights etc...
so from Ballarat ... an overnighter on a weekend just to get out of the house and get the kids away from the computers and tv... good luck!!

Sounds doable.
But need to plan it around school holidays.
Does a cabin in a Big4 caravan park with a jumping pillow constitute for camping?
Truthfully, I've never been proper camping.

I mean, do single mums take their kids into the wilderness and brave the elements?
Families do this kind of stuff.
Not estranged mums and their autistic kids.
Sorry,
Just keeping it real.
But, u have given me food (not mutton) for thought.
Hey why not, there's always glamping.
Hey, why not.

Well, Polly has been fed, and I don't think nashi pears are her bag. Lol
Let's see how the banana goes. I peeled them for her.

Thinking of taking a day trip to the Grampians, is it far from Ballarat central?
If you were to take a day trip only, ( don't own a tent) what would be a good starting point?
It's amazing, I've been here 12-months but haven't explored much around us.

' ......... do single mums take their kids into the wilderness and brave the elements? ........ ' Not generally.
The cabins are not roughing it. They are onsite. cannot guarantee spiders will not be there.
With an autistic child, that changes the thinking.
glamping is very expensive

'Proper camping' is not so good. I have done it.
That camp area has cabins onsite and all facilities there.
Kitchen, showers, power, water, bathrooms, tame kangaroos to pat, a small shop for emergencies only.
You are about 35 mins from town

My daughter is quite brilliant with mathematics, and is otherwise smart as a whip.
The trouble we face is the "change" factor, she's obsessed with routine .... everything has to be done in a specific order. She's textbook L2.
And repetitive behaviour and speech.
Have you seen the film Temple Grandin?
A feeling of peace and assurance washed over me when I was advised to buy this film at an Autism workshop late last year.
And tears too of course.
We are so blessed to have the local resources and support networks we have here in Ballarat.
JB HiFi $10 - Temple Grandin film.
Brilliant heartfelt film for all to watch, even if they don't have children on the spectrum, because chances are everyone knows at least one person who is.
If nurtured, these kids can be brilliant.
If labelled incorrectly, or misunderstood, these kids suffer terribly, at school, socially and beyond.
Early intervention is key, camping in a low sensory environment would suit us.
She's the best behaved child in her class, but I need to attend excursions and school camps, so was required to get my working with children card.
Fortunately, it came back just day's before her first school excursion.
