Telephone scams

Post by Bobby » Sun Jan 16, 2022 5:00 pm

Smith makes an interesting post on another forum.

Smith,
There's a scam been doing the round for ages now,
they phone you and hang up before you can answer to try and get you to return the call.
Once you do, unbeknownst to you, they charge you $5/minute or some such ridiculous figure.
They'll try to keep you on the line for as long as possible by trying to find out who called you,
to run up your tab.
Apparently by the mere act of calling them you accept their 'terms and conditions'
so there is no getting out of the bill later..

That is good to know.
I get about 2 scam SMS mobile phone messages per day -
usually about some parcel delivery or a problem with my internet service etc etc.
It's always a number I don't recognise so I block the number and delete the message.
I thought of phoning them back to tell them to piss off -
but now I realise that I could get charged that $5 per minute
while some con person tries to keep me talking.

Thanks John.

Not only that, the number showing on your phone is often not the number they are ringing from.

I NEVER return calls where I do not know the people and they do not leave a message.

Yes and many of those SMS messages have a long link to click on
which probably identifies whoever clicks on it as the person they sent the SMS to -
and also could contain a website with viruses or malware.

Only answer calls from people you know.
