lance Armstrong - new allegation

Post by sprintcyclist » Sat Dec 11, 2021 8:32 pm

The latest scandal to surround ex-cyclist Lance Armstrong is the accusation of having used technological doping during some of the sport's biggest events.

The American was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles in 2012 after being accused of using performance enhancing drugs between 1998 and 2011, with the rider admitting the offence a year later.

Now, Armstrong has been accused of using a motor on his bike by former French Anti-Doping boss, Jean-Pierre Verdy.

"Lance Armstrong is the biggest scam; he has complicity at every level, he received special treatment," Verdy explained in an interview with Le Parisien. "Many told me that I shouldn't look into the stories, that I would find myself alone, but if the legends are based on something...
"I also believe that he had a motor in his bicycle, I still have the image in my head of a mountain stage where he left everyone behind. At the end I called all the specialists I knew and even they didn't understand how the performance was possible, even with EPO [erythropoietin]."

In response to these allegations, cycling journalist Antoine Vayer posted footage of Armstrong reaching for the back of his bike during a race, supposedly to start an attached motor.

Cycling motors have been on sale to the general public since 1998, though they are banned at elite level competition.
The motors weigh around 800 grams and have 500W of power, enough to leave a cyclist's competitors dragging behind.
The motor has a cylinder engine and is found in one of the bike's tubes. It is connected to the gears through wires and, once activated, starts to power the pedals.

Whilst I'd believe that Lance would be well and truly capable of technological doping, I'm not sure about this one, just from the technology not being that good at the time.

Also just looking at the video there, at least one is just pulling the lycra, and given that at the time, electronic shifting was coming into those TT bikes, I'm just not sure how you could have gotten around with a fairly obvious button under the saddle like that

Yes, I was/am a bit hesitant at this allegation also.
