I am watching a special on the illegal mining of gold in the Amazon jungle. Total destruction resulting in $1200 for one days work. Can you believe it?

The Amazon produces more than 20% of the worlds oxygen and 20% of the worlds water. More than half of the world's estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rainforests. One-fifth of the world's fresh water is in the Amazon Basin.

The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency to help to wipe out these tens of thousands of illegal mines. It has done this before and failed. Let's hope the world listens this time?



It's just heartbreaking

If our foreign aid were to be used in circumstances like this I wouldn't mind.
