President Donald Trump says he is planning to launch land strikes inside Mexico,
further escalating his use of America’s military power.

However, he has said he will refrain from hitting another Latin America nation.

“We are going to start, now, hitting land with regard to the cartels,”
Mr Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Friday, US time.

“The cartels are running Mexico, and it’s very sad to watch, to see what’s happening to that country. But the cartels are running it. They’re killing 250,000, 300,000 people in our country every single year.”

Those figures are inflated, but the real ones are bad enough; fentanyl alone has been killing about 70,000 Americans per year.

Mexico has a democratically elected President, Claudia Sheinbaum – that distinguishes it from Venezuela, whose dictator Nicolas Maduro was in power illegitimately.

Earlier this week, Ms Sheinbaum said Mexico “categorically rejects intervention in the internal matters of other countries”.

“It is necessary to reaffirm that in Mexico the people rule, and that we are a free and sovereign country. Co-operation, yes. Subordination and intervention, no.”

Bit in a New York Times interview, Mr Trump said he would not order more strikes on Venezuela, for now at least, after the Caracas government released political prisoners.

Elsewhere, the fallout continues from the death of 37-year-old mother Renee Nicole Good, who was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis yesterday.
