Stone the crows!

It's a list of common Aussie slang words and expressions.

I didn't realise there were so many!
Aqualung my friend -
Don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see,
It's only me

I'd say that we've probably heard most of them but just don't use them as they sound a little ocker. ;) I actually have a copy of the "Dinkum Dictionary - A ripper guide to Aussie English" ... which states it is "a great guide to the Oz vernacular ..." there are 17,000 entries ,,, some words/expressions and phrases I have never heard of.

It is on page 82 of my Dinkum Dictionary under crikes/crikey - expression of astonishment; a mild oath. So it must have been a naughty word at one stage. :P

What I great reminder. Over time you start to stop using many of these and they stop coming to mind when you like OS unless you are knocking around with a bunch of aussies.

A day back in Aus and it all floods back. I know every word there and rarely use many of them now.

When they do come out, the POMs notice and it provides a laugh.

I tend to use them when pissed off at work without knowing it. It is a great way to get away with things the POMs don't normally like. They are not as direct as we are. The Dutch are much closer to us than the Poms in the directness and no bullshit attitude.

The Poms just shake their head and say "it's OK he's Australian".

I don't use the word 'crikey' but I saw it on another thread which made me chuckle

Blue - fight ("they were having a bit of a blue ").
Blue - make a mistake.
Blue - a ginger.
