The art world is mourning the death of former National Gallery of Australia (NGA) director Betty Churcher, remembering her as a passionate and formidable figure in the Australian art community.
The much-loved former director of the NGA died last night aged 84.
Churcher was the first and so far only female director of the NGA, holding the role from 1990 to 1997.
She always had a wonderful cascading laughter.
Childhood friend Barbra Blackman
Condolences have flowed in from across the art world, with Churcher being remembered as an enthusiastic advocate for bringing masterpieces to Australia.

I thought I had seen where Betty's husband, Roy, had died recently:
ROY CHURCHER
27 January 1933 - 25 December 2014
Much loved husband of Betty.
Father of Ben, Paul, Peter and Tim.
Grandad to Isabel, Lucas, Saul, Charlotte, Toby, Reuben and Oliver.
A private cremation was held on WEDNESDAY, 31 December 2014.
The legacy of his art and
his teaching lives on.

I wonder how old that photo of Betty is? She looked fantastic for her age.

Here is a portrait of her, done recently by her son Peter.
Plus another picture of her showing that she did have a few wrinkles but everybody does at 84 and she still looks remarkable.
