Some points:

The old Collins class would be of little use in a real war as they
have to keep resurfacing for at least half a day every 2 days to
use their diesel engines to recharge their batteries.
Yes - they just use a snorkel for the air but it still
makes them sitting ducks and easier to find.
The nuke subs can hide for 3 months underwater and then surprise the enemy.

Building them could take forever -
long after China invades Taiwan.

The French will be very unhappy to lose a $90 billion contract.
I wonder if we'll have to pay penalties?

The Chinese will also be unhappy -
I wonder if they will invade Taiwan before we get too powerful?

The Reserve Bank will print the money to pay for them –
just like they print money to pay for everything these days.
They cause massive inflation.

I wonder if the Chinese will stop buying our iron ore and coal?
If they do our economy will be stuffed?

The nuclear powered subs will take too long to deliver.
We're talking about 20 years to get 8 subs.

The USA already has 68 such submarines -
far more than any other county.
if the USA was serious
why couldn't they sell us 8 of them right now
as 2nd hand - ready to go?
The whole deal is a fizzer so far -
too little too late.
We should have had them 20 years ago.

From Forbes:
Today the Navy operates 68 submarines.
The force includes 50 attack submarines (SSNs),
14 ballistic-missile subs (SSBNs) and four cruise-missile subs (SSGNs).
All have nuclear powerplants.

China Panics After Learning They’ve Only Got
25 Years Until Australia Gets 8 New Submarines

The news of Scotty’s new plan to rule the seas has apparently struck fear into the heart of Xi Jinping, who is worried that his army of 2.8 million soldiers only have until 2046 to prepare for Australia’s fleet of underwater superboats.

It is believed a shadow of panic has engulfed all 21 million residents in the Chinese capital of Beijing today, as the true force of Australia’s military capabilities hits home.

A nuclear sub is, in fact, easier to find than a diesel sub with modern technology.

Heat trails are visible to satellites.
Sonar can hear the cooling turbines of even a stationary nuke sub, these cannot be turned off.
A diesel sub can hide completly for at least 24 hours running silent and just sitting still.

Under way, each and every sub has a sound signature, known and circulated between allies and the location of just about every sub on earth is either know or can be pretty well discovered.

And what good are nuke subs if tgey dont carry serious armament, nukes?

My bet, we have them already, but to placate the masses, we keep it secret.
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream

France recalls its ambassadors to US and Australia
in submarine deal backlash

Issued on: 17/09/2021 - 21:45

France on Friday said it was immediately recalling its ambassadors to the US and Australia for consultations after Australia struck a deal with the US and UK, which ended a $40 billion French-designed submarine deal.

President Emmanuel Macron made the exceptional decision due to the “gravity of the announcements on September 15 by Australia and the United States”, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in a statement.

The rare diplomatic backlash against France’s allies came two days after Australia announced the scrapping of a major purchase of French conventional submarines in favour of US nuclear-powered submarines.

The announcement represented “unacceptable behaviour between allies and partners”, said the statement.

Yes - after 5 years they hadn't supplied even one rivet.
They supplied loads of words.

Based on the long time it takes to build subs,

I think we should try and hire some off the US or UK as an interim way to speed up their procurement!
