Coffins have been desecrated and human remains have been stolen from a cemetery in Melbourne's inner west in two disturbing incidents that police believe are linked.

Acting Inspector Ben Jarman said the method and location of the crimes suggested they were linked.

The two grave robberies took place on either Thursday night or Friday morning, and on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Acting Inspector Jarman told ABC Radio Melbourne that out of respect to the family, police were not revealing exactly what was taken.

"But we can confirm partial human remains have been stolen," he said.

"Which is very disturbing to the families involved."

They broke into the mausoleum-style grave sites, removed the coffins and accessed the remains.

The coffins were left open when police arrived at the scenes.

"We've been in communication with those families [affected]," Acting Inspector Jarman said.

"And it's very distressing, obviously, this is totally unexpected.

The two mausoleums were located in the same area of the cemetery.

While it appears the crimes are linked, there is no indication the two people buried or their families had a connection.

The families have told police there was nothing of value inside the coffins, except some personal effects.

None of those items appear to have been taken.
