Since they still don't look like dying back, I dug another yam vine up.
Fuckin' YOOJ!! The thing went nearly 6 kilograms
Thought they might end up being less productive than potatoes, which is a shame since it is too warm and humid for potatoes to succeed for much of the year here. But no, not only are they gigantic, I have discovered that the vines produce ariel tubers. The leaf axils on some parts of the vine have little yams growing in them. When I cleared the thick vine away, I found some that had already fallen and taken root in the ground.
But I will put some spuds in anyway soon. Can still get one decent crop in the cooler season.

Apparently they can reach about 75 kilograms if left in the ground for five years or so. Bet it would be like trying to eat wood at that size. Have discovered that the lower three-quaters or so is good but the top quater where the vine emerges from and that is covered in roots, is very fibrous. Re-plant that bit.
Had some success with Lady Chrystal and Desiree. Might dig up a bed this arvo.
