Back in Jun-Jul last year cynik posted there about depression, tied it in to people not helping others or something. Someone said in days past you would get your arse kicked to get out of depression (yup, folks, telling people to 'snap out of it' is infallible NOT!)
I had a prang some time ago, fucking stupid dame came speeding through a redlight into my car and as well as mild concussion and shock suffered what is called reactive depression--the whole post traumatic shock syndrome. Soldiers who have actually been in action suffer it. Cure for the depression was to relax--I had weekly massages. Depression is real. My then business partner was fucking typical, day one all "we will help, take it easy" etc but day 2 it was 'can't you snap out of it?'
Did get out of it, took like Mar–Dec that year. Depression can lead to alcoholism, divorce and ultimately suicide. The comedian Spike Milligan suffered heaps from it.
As for helping others, lots of people join clubs etc related to some area they are interested in and as they learn they pass on what they have learned. Not a bad thing to do at all, what it has to do with depression i don't quite see.
But those who don't suffer from it and have never suffered from it have no idea--when they talk about it is like celibate priests solemnly discussing sex
