Shark madness and the law in Australia

Post by Super Nova » Fri Feb 14, 2014 6:35 pm

What do you think of this?

If I saw a large great white on a beach I lived on and had the chance to kill the bloody thing I think I would have done the same and be thinking I am doing my local community a bloody service. Fining this man is just strange. However I have never really lived by the sea as I grew up inland. What do you coastal dudes think of this ruling?

Man in Australia fined £10,000 for ramming shark with boat

Man in Australia fined after killing shark by ramming it with his boat and beating it with a pole

A man who killed a great white shark in Australia by repeatedly ramming it with his boat and beating it with a pole has been fined almost A$18,000 (£10,000)

A court in the state of New South Wales found Justin Adam Clark, 40, guilty of harming a threatened species after he apparently injured the shark with the boat’s propeller and then towed it to a boat ramp and killed it.

The master of a boat that helped to tow the shark pleaded guilty to harming a threatened species and was given a six-month good behaviour bond.

Though Western Australia recently approved a controversial cull of large sharks – including great whites - after a series of deadly attacks, the creatures are listed as threatened in Australia and the culled sharks can only be killed by contracted fishermen.

Witnesses said Clark chased the shark in his boat in waters south of Sydney and then led it to shallow water, where he repeatedly hit it with his vessel. He then tied a rope to its tail and towed it with help from a second boat.

“This conviction sends a strong message that harming of our threatened species will not be tolerated,’’ the NSW government said in a statement.

“Everyone needs to know the rules and ignorance is no excuse,’’

The cull of large sharks has generated protests by thousands of people across the country.

Which species do you think is more at threat, SN?

Shark obviously with us human crowding the planet.

While I never want to see a species go extinct I do think this fine is a little over the top. I guess they want to send a message.

I guess being a land lubber and have no real experience with the sea I just have little empathy for these animals.

The sound effects from jaws always echos in my mind when I enter the sea.

I didn't know whites are warming blooded.
White sharks are large, rare, warm-blooded apex marine predators. It is estimated that they mature at 12-18 years for females and 8-10 years for males. Maximum length is 6.4 metres, though specimens of up to 7 metres may exist. White sharks reproduce only once every two to three years and produce between two and ten pups per litter.

Well he did kill it in a pretty brutal way (the worst injuries were inflicted by the propellers, apparently). And it is a protected species anyway. If I shoot a wedgie (which is killing my livestock), humanely, there are fines up to to 50K or something.

Yeah, fair cop.

Meanwhile in WA, the govt is paying fishermen to kill great whites after having 7 attacks in 2 years.

You'd get less of a fine if you beat a persons head in. Fucked up priorities when you cop more of a fine for killing an animal than a human.
