NSW won't allow shooting in schools

THERE are no plans to allow target shooting in NSW schools, despite the Education Department investigating the proposal last year, Education Minister Adrian Piccoli says.

An internal department submission obtained by The Daily Telegraph shows that planning was underway last year to allow shooting at 650 high schools across the state, with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia consulted on the changes.

However, the plan was shelved in October by concerned former department head Michael Coutts-Trotter and his then deputy Trevor Fletcher.

The submission is believed to have been commissioned as part of negotiations between the former Labor Government and the Shooters and Fishers Party, which has long lobbied for shooting in schools, the paper said.

Mr Piccoli today ruled out allowing sports shooting in schools.

"The NSW Government has no plans to change the current arrangements," he said.

I would have thought Bob Brown would have had something to say about this well before Liberals ruled out shooting for sport in our kids schools.

The NSW Department of Education and Training's Guidelines for Safe Conduct of Sport and Physical Activity in Schools is 284 pages long, with detailed requirements for 61 different sports from abseiling to water polo.

Just some of the prohibited sports include break dancing, tobogganing, hang-gliding, boxing, and rock-fishing.

NSW students should remain in the shade if possible between 11am and 3pm daylight savings time and padding must be 2m high on goal posts. Students aren't allowed to throw curve balls at baseball until they are in Year 9. Finishing tape is banned from certain running events for fear of choking runners. Teachers are recommended to confirm that students can swim before letting them onto the high diving platform.
Oh and tip's "Your it" is banned now also... it's called assault these days apparently.

Instead, Labors nanny-state governments might be inclined to appoint an "Expert playground activity review panel" to assist decision-makers with making decisions.

Then will probably appoint an "Expert Playground activity action panel" to assist the EPARP (Expert Playground Activity Review Panel) with acting upon the the decisions the former panel made for them, only for them to further appoint another panel to re-review the final report, who will then delegate this to another panel for them to review also.

There's no credible evidence that suggests kids using guns for target shooting practice will become violent criminals. Nothing wrong with kids learning to shoot a gun, if that is what they wish to do. It's a sport. Rural youngsters would love it.

Sports shooting was encouraged during the communist regimes. ... in schools and sport centres and as a consequence the general population have been exposed to a gun youth culture.

It sounds liberal, self empowered and anything but communism at first glance, however it;s the regime behind the initiative you need to delve into much more than you have.

I am all for guns on properties, and perhaps even the introduction of accredited school based licensing for agricultural studies for farming purposes for secondary students, though you have to ask why is a normally gun-loathing Labor party wanting to break bread with the neo-right (they used to regard red-neck shooters) and had planned to pass legislation shortly before a federal election.

It's not rocket science.

What are the health benefits of firing a gun for sport?

Australian kids should be playing cricket, swimming, moving around, and getting active....not doing at a rifle range what they can do in their lounge-rooms/bedrooms standing up in front of their TV hooked up to X-box live.

If Gillards fruit bowl wasn't so barren, she'd feel very differently about this, i'm sure.

When I wath at thcool we were allowed rooting at thcool. Our Prietht uthed to give uth a good buggering in the thtaff room and we were pleathed to have that thruthting in the back pathage. Yes it's bollocks. I owned a slug gun when 14 and walked the streets shooting at things. Trying to hit birds mostly. Missed always.

By 16 I owned my very own 22. Went shooting unsupervised.

Most of my mates did the same.

A few crazies over the years have put a stop to that.

Hell, does anyone remember cadets. We were using SLRs at the firing range.

No-one from a year of 150 kids when out killing anyone that I have heard of. School of 800.

In fact I have not heard of anyone acting in this way that was around firearms.

What I learned was to respect the gun and it kills. When you see a dead animal you appreciate what power you have and appreciate the responsibility to go with it.

BTW: I hung up my guns long ago. I never want to kill another thing again unless it is for food or is a real threat as a pest. However if I ever need to use one, I know how and how to use it safely.

They are trying to manage an unmanageable risk. They have reduced access to the weapons. There is no harm in learning to use them for sport. It is a legitimate sport.

Bloody nannies, my nan would have shot them up the bum with bird seed for such rubbish while drinking a can of VB. What has happened to Australia... are you trying to become Europe??
