Gen Goonie

Post by mellie » Mon Apr 21, 2025 8:02 am

I really need to laugh about this, this is definitely me, I was about 8 when the Goonie movie came out, and can completely relate to this. We'd ride for miles on our bikes, climb buildings roofs, ( via air-conditioning units) he he he would play arcade games and ride our bikes and swim in strangers swimming pools ( and our own) unsupervised until street lights came on and our parents returned from work. We'd go swimming at the beach by ourselves, swim in rivers, I look back , and I cringe at all the horrible things that could have happened .... and won't even let my own 12 year old cross the road unattended to visit a friend.

We were definitely free-range, and fiercely independent, I still am, I adore both my parents however faced with the prospect of living in the same state as them even, kinda makes me twitch. πŸ˜„

My mother would be at my house 24/7. She honestly would πŸ˜†

We were a silent generation simply because we were too busy off enjoying our own adventures, we cheated near- abductions, death from falling off huge pipelines and buildings, we organised to sleep at eachothers houses and went out until until we liked, we practically did as we pleased, no parental guidance required nor desired.

Wow, if only our parents really knew. πŸ˜…

I still get pangs of guilt thinking about it, poor things.

Would I have swapped this childhood for the world?

Not a chance.

Beer and petrol were cheaper back then paddocks were greener and there was no Green political party.

What we have today is the result of yesteryear.

The grass wasn't always so green TLD, I remember there were still the Greens party, but they at least pretended to care about the trees , weren't radical climatists, as for fuel, well I remember being in the car lining up during fuel rations and strikes, and as for paddocks, not in Sydney where I grew up, parks perhaps, not actual paddocks so....

My dad worked in the military, was a soldier too, then went into a specialist area within the military.
So was his father, and so was my mother's father.
Strong patriotic military familial background.
Both sides of my family.

However, as free-range as we were, we never got into any trouble with neighbours or police because there were strict rules in exchange for our freedoms.
Groundings meant Groundings, if we didn't follow the rules we copped it.

And Groundings didn't mean sitting at home having fun on your ipad πŸ™„.....it meant totally being excluded from absolutely everything except for school.

Wasn't worth misbehaving, the throught of being completely excluded from all those wonderful freedom's in a sweltering hot bedroom away from friends enjoying adventures just wasn't worth the risk!

Not enough discipline in schools or homes these days, parents are too busy having "self- time" on social-media they could care less what their kids are getting up to inside their own bedrooms, much less on the streets.

And this is a huge problem.

Different times, there were no Greens when I was growing.

I've had 5 generations of military in my family including my oldest son and myself. May be more then 5 but I don't have records prior to WW1.

Same, we have multiple generations of lost souls and active service men ( and even women) in our family too, however not so much as Australia, because my ancestors beyond grandparents from both sides migrated here from England. Beyond this, they come from Norway, Portugal, France Ireland... something my mums keen on researching but not yet something I've really delved into beyond mums own research so....

My father is currently reading a really good book, Anglo Saxons, a history there of ( something like this) by a Marc Morris ( I think this is the spelling) I'm keen to read this when he's finished with it.

Wow, no Greens?

I can't even remember a time they weren't throwing a spanner into our works and disrupting peace and order.
Pains in the asses.
