Countries vote at UN to back world map that shows Africa's true size
The UN resolution at the General Assembly, which was passed by 64 votes to one with six abstentions, promotes the 2018 Equal Earth projection, which more accurately portrays the size of continents.

The Equal Earth projection is fundamentally not designed for navigation, as it is an equal-area map projection.
The Mercator map was designed in 1569 to help seafarers navigate the world it was important for sailors because any straight line drawn on the map represented a compass direction. Equal Earth – created by cartographers Bojan Savric, Bernhard Jenny and Tom Patterson in 2018 – sacrifices that.

The US was the only one to oppose it. Strange stance since Trump is continually changing US maps with his name changes.
The Equal Earth Projection was meant to show Africa closer to it's true size but there is very little difference. It makes Canada and Russia look very small too. *shrug
