How did your parents, and their parents vote?

My mothers side of the family were Labor voters, ( they were working class) though my mother has voted Liberal now for a number of years.

My fathers side of the family were Liberal voters, (they had businesses) so voted Liberal.

My mother was a rusted on Liberal and had the most influence in the home. My father was a Labor man and hated the Liberals with a vengeance. It was some comfort that he died just prior to Howard getting elected. I'm not sure how the ancestors voted.

My mothers father, a returned serviceman ( PNG) was a rusted on Labor voter also, and so much so he would instruct my poor grandmother how to vote. "Now you make sure you vote Labor Val, or else." he was the dominant character on my mothers side of the family and what he said went.

My poor grandmother would have been too scared to vote Liberal, even if she had have wanted to I think.

My fathers parents and small business people were actually Menzies/Liberal campaigners, were right into politics and always had the big wooden party signs on their front lawn during the election campaign period.

They did other stuff, helped out down at the polling booths also.



Politics was something that featured prominently at our dinner table and when the family would gather for festive occasions.... my fathers side of the family lived and breathed politics, they still do.

I'm not sure whether that's meant to be funny or serious SN, but Labor has always been hard when it comes to dishing out welfare payments. You must be getting them mixed up with the Liberals who believe every man and his dog deserves a handout because the greedy deserve it just as much as the needy.

Labor has forever been known to be sticking their hands in the pockets of others to bolster their constituents. They have always been about wanting the workers to be reliant on the state and if it was up to them you would hand them your entire earnings and they would then decide how much they are going to give you back.

The welfare bill almost doubled during the Coalition's 10 years. The only PM who did any porkbarrelling was Howard as he grabbed truckloads of cash off our money tree and threw it at wealthy self funded retirees, those who could afford private hospital cover and families earning up to $80,000 paid no tax at all once they received their family payments. Private schools, in Howard's estimation, deserved more federal funding than public schools because they had more tennis courts and swimming pools to maintain. Means testing became non existent. Millionaires claimed their entitlements too.

If nothing else Labor has tried to make inroads into reducing our welfare bill by re-applying means testing. You might resent the asylum seekers getting the dole each fortnight, but it's worked out a whole lot cheaper than being kept in detention.

Abbott's going to go down the same path as Howard. Generous parental leave payments for the high income earners - low payments for the lowly. What's the bet he removes means testing again also?

Liberals with their Country Party associations did provide some supprot for those in the country. This always went down well. They voted Labor primarily because they felt that the liberals were too focused on business and farming and not the working class. When you are dependant on benefits or social housing their view was Labor provided a better chance for their choice of lifestyle.

So they voted Labor.
