Price Discrimination? Racial Discrimination?

This reminds me of something else I see here in the States: on Sunday some restaurants offer lunch discounts to churchgoers who bring in whatever printed *guide* (can't think of the proper term) to the church services that was given out that day. I don't go to church and it is rare that I eat the shitty food that churchgoers here in America love but it does seem unfair that they would get a discount while I would not.

Philip says this is a hair-cutting joint in Washington, D.C. As you can see, it offers a 50% discount if your name is — in this case — Amanda, Rachel, Katie, Peter, Andrew, or David. I don’t have my master database of black-white names handy (hey, it’s summer), but I’m pretty sure that at least five out of those six skew pretty white. So, a couple of questions:
+ What names do you think will be featured the following week?
+ Could this price-discriminating advertisement in fact be construed as racial discrimination? If there’s a plausible argument to be made that tipping should be outlawed because blacks systematically earn less than whites, might some legal wizard — armed with black-white names data — see this sign as a discriminatory discount?

Much ado about nothing. Fact is, a lot of the styling and hair cutting techniques used on whites are radically different from what blacks need (seriously, some of our haircare products would melt your hair). Barber shops and hair salons also tend to cater to local clients, so I'm not really seeing the problem with a shop in a predominantly white neighborhood whose clients are predominantly white using names on their sign that are more commonly associated with white people.
