Simple, there was no substantial farming at all, and as the Norse failed to adapt to the conditions, those who didn't leave ate their hunting dogs before they eventually starved to death. Eskimos on the other hand adapted quite well and had far better success hunting seals. All those Viking outposts failed and fell into ruin. Scandinavians deserted Greenland for centuries until Denmark declared it Dane territory.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

The Vikings first came to Greenland in 982 AD and they left between 1480 – 1500 AD.
In 1991 two Caribou hunters in Greenland stumbled on a Viking farm that had been buried in the permafrost for 500 years.
When the Vikings arrived in Greenland they were able to build farming settlements, raise cattle and sheep and live reasonably well even though life was always hard because the first frosts arrived in August and the fjords were frozen solid by October. The question that has puzzled people for centuries is why did the Vikings disappear from Greenland around 1500 AD?
Latest evidence shows that as the climate cooled and Greenland’s ice sheet expanded life became too hard for the Vikings as they failed to take advantage of technologies from the Innuit people who were colonising northen Greenland. The lack of trees in Greenland made ship building very difficult and trade with Norway for wood and luxury items like spices and wine was crucial for the survival of the settlements.
During the first two hundred years the Norse thrived in their new though remote northern lands. The inner fjords of southwest Greenland filled with people and animals. Cemetery excavations project population estimates of 4-5000, with most people living in the Eastern Settlement. Ruins of more than 300 farms, twenty-two churches, a nunnery, and many cemeteries have been found and mapped, and many have been excavated. Finds indicate a thriving community whose institutions, culture, and subsistence remained firmly European, while construction of elaborate churches demonstrate their Christian beliefs seem to have grown steadily stronger.
The Vikings are both famous and notorious for their like of beer and mead, and archaeologists have discussed for years whether Eric the Red (ca. 950-1010) and his followers had to make do without the golden drink when they settled in Greenland around the year 1,000.

The Greenland climate was mild when they landed, but was it warm enough for growing corn?

Researchers from the National Museum in Copenhagen say the answer to the question is ‘yes’. In a unique find, they uncovered very small pieces of charred grains of barley in a Viking rubbish heap on Greenland.

The find is final proof that the first Vikings to live in Greenland did grow barley – the most important ingredient in brewing beer, making a form of porridge or baking bread, traditionally seen as staple foods in the Vikings’ nutritional diet.

So there were Vikings.
There was farming...
Just in your opinion not substantial.
Yogi... don't try the strawman on me or change my argument by doing so ok?
I can't be bothered giving you a REAL history lesson... stay in denial, fine by me. :rofl :rofl :rofl

Yes .. lead by an outlaw.
Rorschach wrote:There was farming...
Attempts yes, but it failed. The Norse while in Greenland subsisted off hunting deer and imports from Scandinavia til they abandoned Greenland for centuries.
Rorschach wrote:Just in your opinion not substantial.
Not my opinion. The opinion of archeologists who've studied and documented the attempted colonisation.
Rorschach wrote:Yogi... don't try the strawman on me or change my argument by doing so ok?
Ahm, you've lost me. I can't see this supposed strawman you mention, which begs the question, do you actually comprehend the term?

That's OK, I wouldn't try to give a history lecture if I failed the subject either.

A strawman is where you claim I said something I didn't.
You seem to continually do it...
Most others will notice if they can be bothered to check.

You didn't read any of those links did you.
All I've ever said is that Vikings lived on Greenland, they had settlements and farms... and that at some stage Greenland was green.... all valid verifiable points... the rest is your strawman fantasy.

As for your childish crap... you must be an insecure little bastard.

Landnám is the Old Norse word (roughly translated as "land take") which refers to the Viking style of land management practices. These practices, based on traditional northern-European methods, were established in Iceland during the 9th century AD and Greenland in the 10th century. The direct transplant of inappropriate farming methods is widely considered responsible for the environmental degradation of Iceland and, to a lesser degree, Greenland.
