Multicultural Affairs & African Youth Gangs in the Spotlight!
'Most migrants don't know what it means to be Australian': New minister responsible for multicultural affairs calls for 'foreign thugs' to be deported as he rails against African gangs
The new assistant minister in charge of Multicultural Affairs has said most migrants need to learn how to be Australian and has vowed to deport gang members if they are not citizens.
Jason Wood, who will work under Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton as Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs, said he is concerned about the lack of integration by some migrant groups.
Last month, the Liberal member for La Trobe slammed 'out of control African youth gangs' in Melbourne and has also said migrants who commit crimes should be deported.
Mr Wood told the Sydney Morning Herald he made no apology for his earlier Facebook comments.
'If you want someone in this role to say, 'everything's fine, everything's dandy' – I'm not the guy for the job,' Mr Wood said.
He said that while his new role requires him to listen to migrant communities, he's also concerned about the needs of the broader community and their feelings about the issue.
'Most migrants when they come here don't know what it means to be Australian. It's more (about) making the effort to get multicultural groups together and mix with the other more traditional, sporting groups,' he told the publication.
Mr Wood refused to retract his previous comments about deportations, saying that the rehabilitation role of prisons did not work.
'You put these guys in jail and they don't come out clean shaven and ready to work, they come out ready to go to the next level in the world of crime,' he said.
'If you're on a visa here and you commit a carjacking or home invasion ... I don't care where you're from, if that's what you do, you go home.'
Mr Wood had previously said on Facebook that 'African gangs were out of control' in response to recent violence at Melbourne's Fountain Gate shopping centre.
Last month he wrote: 'I've secured legislation to deport foreign-born thugs, but Bill Shorten and Labor will not support!
'I've arranged with Minister for Home Affairs Mr Dutton, to have the AFP as part of a National Anti-Gangs Squad to target violent youth gangs in the South East and Western suburbs.'
Mr Wood, who was sworn in on Wednesday, said on Facebook that he has 'no hesitation (in) calling out African gangs'.
He went on to recognise the 'majority' of African migrants follow the law and 'contribute to Australian culture'.

Good! It is about time The Government did something positive about this. Well done Jason Wood (and Peter Dutton).

Yes about time too. The down side of allowing this to go on unabated is that the black Africans who are good hard working people will end up being targeted because people will be afraid of them. We aren't like the US and the UK where it is normal to come across black people every day.

My dad told me 24 boats are on the way, and they’ve intercepted one of them.
Like pizza boy, seems like the people smugglers were backing a labor win

I'd prefer them in the cross hairs than the spotlight.
I have a dream
A world free from the plague of Islam
A world that has never known the horrors of the cult of death.
My hope is that in time, Islam will be nothing but a bad dream
