Why is Pommy/Poms so insulting?

Post by FLEKTARN » Sun Jun 02, 2019 12:19 pm

For the first time I saw that insults in the Wolf Creek movie. Tourists from the UK often got called fucking pommies, pommy :S , or poms by the serial killer in the movie.

I liked how it sounded, so decided to try it. Today, was just the next day, a regular day, when I used these words against a citizen of England. And he lost his shit.

I don't know why this word is so insulting to Brits. What's the history behind it? Englishmen get so triggered by this word, a single innocent word - at first glimpse.

Why?

Most pommies I know aren't insulted by the word "pom".
There are several folk etymologies for "Pommy" or "Pom". The best-documented of these is that "Pommy" originated as a contraction of "pomegranate".[11][12] According to this explanation, "pomegranate" was Australian rhyming slang for "immigrant" ("Jimmy Grant").[13] Usage of "pomegranate" for English people may have been strengthened by a belief in Australia that sunburn occurred more frequently amongst English immigrants, turning those with fair skin the colour of pomegranates.[14] Another explanation – now generally considered to be a false etymology – was that "Pom" or "Pommy" were derived from an acronym such as POM ("Prisoner of Millbank"), POME ("Prisoner of Mother England") or POHMS ("Prisoner Of Her Majesty's Service").[15] However, there is no evidence that such terms, or their acronyms, were used in Australia when "Pom" and "Pommy" entered use there.

And of course the word "pommy" should always be preceded by the word "whinging"....

I work with many POMs. They don't think it is a bad term and know us aussie's are taking the piss in a friendly way. I normally use it when they are having a go at me being an aussie. Sport brings it out.

The first time I heard that word was in the Wolf Creek series. Mick keeps calling tourists "pommy fluffy bunny" or "pommy bastard" or just "pom", and it sounds very insulting, AND judging by the reaction I get from real poms in real life! A week ago some bugger was writing shit about Bulgaria in a Facebook group, so I called him by the pom word and he lost it. Started swearing, insulting, cursing me, just because I called him a pom.

It is just the Australian way to carry on about POMS .... most of our ancestors came here from the UK. Back in the 1960s we advertised to get more UK poms to come here and actually allowed the 10 pound POM thing. Also we had the White Australia Policy until the 70s.
