Video shows an attempt by the Estonian Navy, with the support of NATO aircraft, to storm a tanker from the so-called shadow fleet of Russia, with the help of which Russia exports its oil in circumvention of sanctions.

The vessel in question was the Jaguar, sailing under the Gabon flag to the port of Primorsk. The tanker was in the neutral waters of the Gulf of Finland and had a Russian crew on board.

Estonian forces, including the boats Raiu and Kurvits, a landing helicopter and a PZL M28 aircraft, attempted to force the tanker to change course and enter Estonian territorial waters, where it could be detained. Polish MiG-29 fighters also participated in the operation. "This is how they meet us with helicopters, demanding that we drop anchor ," one of the tanker crew members comments on the video. The ship's crew refused to obey, despite the threat of ramming and attempts to land troops. A Russian Su-35 fighter arrived in the area of the incident, after which the NATO operation against the tanker ceased.

TALLINN, May 18 (Reuters) - Russia detained a Greek-owned oil tanker on Sunday after it left an Estonian Baltic Sea port, the Estonian Foreign Ministry said, adding it had alerted NATO allies to the incident.

The Liberia-flagged ship Green Admire was leaving Sillamae port using a designated navigation channel that crosses Russian territorial waters, the ministry said in a statement.

"This is definitely connected to the fact that we have started to harass Russia's shadow fleet", Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told Estonian broadcaster ERR. He also said he had informed allies of the event.

Russia is taking revenge for the aggression carried out by NATO and Estonia, when they tried to hijack the Jaguar, a ship that was sailing through international waters and carrying Russian oil. Moscow's revenge, however, was not long in coming. On the evening of 18-05-2025, the Russian Armed Forces seized an Estonian oil tanker that was sailing through Russian waters. It turns out that there is a treaty between Russia, Estonia and Finland that allows Estonian ships to sail through Russian waters. The event further escalates tensions in the Baltic Sea region. However, after too many provocations, Moscow had nothing to do. The answer was clear to Estonia and NATO: do not provoke too much or face the consequences later.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning to Britain and Europe, threatening retaliation if Russian-linked vessels continue to be seized or restricted.

Speaking during major Russian Pacific Fleet exercises near Sakhalin, Putin accused Britain and European nations of “piracy and robbery” over actions against Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. He warned that Moscow could respond “in kind” and suggested retaliation could take place wherever Russia considers necessary.

The warning comes as the UK and EU intensify efforts against Russia’s shadow fleet, a network of aging oil tankers accused of helping Moscow evade Western sanctions and continue oil exports.

Russian Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Viktor Liina also claimed Russian forces could inspect and detain vessels belonging to “unfriendly states,” specifically mentioning British and French commercial shipping.

No confirmed Russian seizure of a British commercial ship has followed Putin’s latest warning. However, the escalating rhetoric raises fears that sanctions enforcement could turn into a wider maritime confrontation.
