To me it looks like the snail does not want to be eaten by the French.
BTW, when I worked in PNG New Britain there were gigantic snails there and local tribesmen apart from eating them used them as missiles for their slings in inter-tribal warfare. One day I had to pull locals apart and confiscated slings. I brought one sling back to Australia and since there are no gigantic snails where I live I used oranges for practice, could hit a cow at 80 meters easy.

Wow. I like Papuan battles. More like ceremonies of intimidation more than direct physical violence which seemed a minority experience. Just big Haka battles. I reckon if poison blow darts were used though....

They don't use poison blow darts in PNG New Britain, killings traditionaly done with slings, spears, bow and arrows.
Bush knives and firearms are new weapons introduced by whites and used lately too.

I know. They more like just a bit of biffo and not a real attempt to wipe the opposition out entirely.
