Basa hit the Milk Bar corner shop hamburger Fish & chips stores first in Australia as a half price cheaper fish import.
Although still sold in price range here a $1 or 2 under local fish prices. It soon flooded the Australian market.

A Current Affair followed the fish import to the source.
The Mekong River. The Basa Catfish.
The program showed rubbish, pollutants dumped into the River. But the most shocking was that all along the entire Mekong. Houses and buildings had their toilets overhanging where PLOP PLOPS into the river always had the Basa congregating and in frenzy for the faecal matter.

...the Basa market in Australia took a big dive after this aired and the knowledge of this got around.

I was sucker to have had Basa twice back then, before realising. Since then, never again.

Basa is still being consumed in Australia and around 2010.
Many inspectors found that many (especially Asian owned and run) Seafood sellers, like in Shopping Malls & Markets, were selling Basa under false names like Snapper, Barra, Myanmar Barra and more.

next time it will be a higher quality fish - maybe snapper?

Look for Gurnard (also known as Latchet).
Better quality than over hyped Flathead and almost half the price, plus the fillets are bigger.
Snapper is also good.

I used to buy Latchet years ago because it made a very excellent fish pie. I haven't seen it in eons though.

Although Latchet and some Gurnard are treated as interchangeable in fish markets and restaurants they aren't exactly the same.

Both are ugly and have spikes though lol.
