On the policy front, Mr Howes said Labor's opposition to gay marriage is "indefensible"; that the citizens assembly was a "silly stunt"; and the internet filter a "stupid idea".
He said the swings to the Greens and the disillusionment of the ALP base were caused by Labor's "unwillingness to provide real leadership", including its inaction on climate change and its approach to refugees.
