How do they effect you personally?
After visiting certain forums I can honestly say I feel nothing but dissapointment and disgust for the way some conduct themselves because of the protection of the internet. Will say things they would never say in every day life and care little for those on the receiving end.
I have been left thinking that some are just vicious and creepy. Others are very sweet lovely people.
PA1 has some very good people .

Re: Forums
I quite like most forums, I manage to find a lot of fodder for the furnaces.
Stupid people like you two are best as they tend to burn longer due to the excess oxygen in the cranium

Re: Forums
That is not necessarily a bad thing. The taboos and social feedback that stop people from acting inappropriately in real life also prevent them from speaking up where it is necessary. Speaking out against slavery for example was once frowned upon. For me, I don't think I would have come to my position of openly supporting whaling if it weren't for online forums. I still feel wierd when I explain it in real life. People respond with things like 'but what if you actually succeeded'? There is so much appeal to emotion in that issue that it's like there is a brick wall between the rational side of people's brains and what they say. Online forums allow you to follow an argument to it's logical conclusion without the taboos that would normally trip you up along the way. Will say things they would never say in every day life
Think of it as a new freedom. It really doesn't harm anyone. If you are upset by what you read, practice a bit more self control. There have always been very nasty things in the library or the adult shop or the wierd bookstore that you didn't want to read. Now it is at your fingertips you can't stop yourself from burning them. There will always be a forum around that practices a level of censorship that matches your needs, but it won't be as interesting. Or maybe it will.

I love debate forums!
People like ourselves are not rare but are not exceedingly common either. The forums give us daily debating opportunities that many of us would otherwise not have in daily life.
BTW Freediver, are you the same Freediver that used to post on the Your Rights At Work forum?

Re: Forums
Yes I posted there a few times. I think the forum shut down though.

To the gutless wonders who like posting these nasty, sniping little remarks - why don't you join up and make a decent contribution?
